5.0 out of 5 stars Great wheels for the price, September 26, 2011

I have put about 600 miles on this MACH1 EXE Rear Wheel and I'm very pleased with how it's held up. They came out of the box pretty true, I did have a local Bike Shop fine true them for me to exact but only because they are friends and did it for free. Had I not had this connection I would have ridden them right out of the box and I believe they would have been fine. I ride in the Rocky Mountains and any one who knows our roads know they are rough! These wheels have held up great over countless pot holes and road debris and look great. I would recommend them.

4.0 out of 5 stars 135mm hub, unclear description, October 24, 2011

I took a chance and ordered this wheel, knowing it was probably not a 147mm hub. It turns out it is 135mm, which is a common mountain hub spacing, but with 700c rims, perhaps this would be better labeled as a cyclocross wheel?

Most recent road frames have 130mm dropout spacing, and it takes very little to squeeze this wheel into it. My bike, from the late 80s, is spaced at 125mm, so I need quite a bit of muscle to get the wheel in, but it works fine when it is in there.

The wheel itself is solid and well-built. Bearings are a little tight, as mentioned, but an easy fix with a cone wrench. Rim is perhaps a millimeter or two out-of-true, but that is to be expected at this price.

When I received this (super-fast shipping from Niagra Cycle Works), it appeared good quality and I was pleasantly surprised to see it was Made in USA. The construction was different than I was accustomed to in that the rim is kind of a double-deck design where the rim that the tube and tire ride on has access holes to a kind of sub-floor where the spoke nuts actually tighten against it. These access holes are pretty large and with the standard thin rim strip and the higher pressure in the 700c tire (85psi), the tube would push through these access holes and make a small tear in the tube. It would hold air long enough for a 30-mile ride, but would be flat the next day. I ruined two tubes before I figured this out. A THICKER RIM STRIP IS A MUST IF YOU DON'T WANT TO RUIN THE TUBE!!! After I figured out what was going on (I used Slime tire protector cut down to proper width for the rim strip), it sizes up to be a great wheel for the price. Note: This wheel is made with the threaded hub... Read more
