I have been cycling for less than a year and recently moved from a hybrid bike to a road bike. I am 5'10" and weigh 210 lbs. I have a Selle Italia max flite gel and a Fizik Alliante, both were causing pain and irritation on the road bike due to the different position I think. Also I never had the sit bones measured. Finally did the measurements at home using the foil on stairs method, probably not the most accurate but close hopefully. The measurements showed my sit bones were on the wide side. After researching and delaying for a couple of weeks because I did not want to pay over $200- I bit the bullet. I have rarely found any reviews where the Selle SMP was not liked. The decision came down to the Avant and the Plus. I decided to order the Avant and thankfully it arrived Friday the day before I was doing my first 24 mile ride at the Calhoun Ride or Walk for Cancer in Connecticut. Yes it's pricey but worth every penny. I actually own two, one for my mountain bike and one for my road bike. Like many reviewers I tried a number of saddles in a variety of price ranges. None solved my problem of tail bone pain. On the selle saddles the load is on your sit bones so the tail bone "floats", for lack of a better description, and thus doesn't take a pounding as you ride. The one thing I will recommend is that you get your sit bones measured (there is a way to do this yourself at home, which I did, just google "measuring your sit bones") and purchase the selle model that most closely fits you. It does take three or four rides to acclimate to this type of saddle, but once I did I knew I would never ride anything else. |
